Grande Comore · Capital
Moroni
A coral medina, a white mosque on the harbour and lively markets: the capital of the Union of the Comoros is best explored on foot, to the rhythm of the ocean.

Experience
Stroll through the medinas, visit ancient mosques, citadels and museums: a journey through a thousand years of Swahili history.
The old towns of Moroni, Mutsamudu and Domoni are best discovered on foot, letting yourself be guided by the alleys, the stone stairways and the covered passages. Look up at the carved doors and the mashrabiya screens, step into courtyards when invited, and take time for tea on a shady square.
To visit a mosque, ask permission, wear clothing that covers you and avoid prayer times.
The National Centre for Documentation and Scientific Research (CNDRS), in Moroni, and the Museum of Mayotte, in Dzaoudzi, present the history, archaeology, traditions and nature of the archipelago. A good introduction before heading out into the field.
