The ascent

At 594 m, Mount Choungui is not the highest summit on the island (that is Mount Bénara, 660 m), but it is by far the most spectacular. The path starts from the pass above the village of Choungui; the climb, of about 1 hr 30, becomes very steep towards the end. Ropes sometimes help on the steepest sections.

The panorama

At the summit, the 360° view takes in the lagoon, the double coral barrier reef of the south-west, the islets and, on a clear day, the mountains of Anjouan. Set off early to enjoy the cool air and a soft light.

Tips

  • Set off at daybreak and take at least two litres of water.
  • Avoid the hike in rainy weather: the ground becomes slippery.
  • Do not go alone, and tell your host about your route.
