Languages
The common language is Shikomori (Comorian), a Bantu language close to Swahili, which comes in Shingazidja, Shimwali, Shindzuani and Shimaore. French is widely understood and Arabic is an official language in the Union of the Comoros. In Mayotte, people also speak Kibushi, a language of Malagasy origin.
A few words
| English | Comorian |
|---|---|
| Thank you | Marahaba |
| Welcome | Karibu |
| Goodbye | Kwaheri |
Greetings vary from one island to another: an effort to learn them is always met with a smile.
Good practice
- Dress: away from the beaches, cover your shoulders and knees, especially in villages and places of worship.
- Photos: always ask permission before photographing someone, especially women and children.
- Religion: Islam sets the rhythm of daily life. Friday midday is devoted to prayer.
- Ramadan: avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during the day.
- Hospitality: if you are invited, accepting tea or a meal is a mark of respect.
