Between the islands

Regional flights link Grande Comore, Mohéli, Anjouan and Mayotte in 30 to 45 minutes. Boats (fast launches and ferries) also make the crossings, more cheaply but subject to the weather. Timetables are often changed: reconfirm the day before and build some slack into your itinerary.

Safety at sea: only board official vessels equipped with life jackets, and give up if the sea is rough. Never take makeshift boats.

On each island

  • Shared taxis: the most common and cheapest way to get around. The fare is set per journey; ask before getting in.
  • Car with driver: recommended on Anjouan and Mohéli, where the roads are narrow and winding.
  • Car hire: possible on Grande Comore and in Mayotte. Traffic drives on the right. An international driving permit is advisable in the Union of the Comoros.

In Mayotte

The barge (ferry) links Mamoudzou (Grande-Terre) with Dzaoudzi (Petite-Terre) at regular intervals. Traffic is heavy at rush hour around Mamoudzou: plan your journeys ahead, especially to get to the airport.
